Day 2 – First day of classes
This year for the first time Redken trialled a 45 minute class time slot allowing attendees to attend up to 12 classes over the 2 days. Start times were staggered to allow for breaks and to move from one class to the next. Some classes were held on both days to allow everyone a chance to attend and also for any over laps with other classes. I had great feedback from attendees regarding the time slots as they felt they were able to engage better for a shorter amount of time and were able to maximise their education experience.
Classes started at 9am, however as the saying goes the early bird gets the worm and boy were there some early birds. All off to see Josh Wood @joshwoodcolour at 8am in Times Square. Josh is Redken’s Global Color Creative Director and held a 30 minute couch session with Sheri Doss @sheridoss the VP of Redken Education Global. Sheri wore a fabulous custom made dress in black and white with photographs of the Redken artists all over.
The session began with hearing about Josh’s career and how he had ending up in the hair industry and now aligned with a great brand like Redken supporting Global Creative Director Guido Palau @guidopalau in the editorial world.
Josh said “What was I doing before Shades Eq?” having created a vintage pastels collection for a Marc Jacobs show, Josh shared photos with the audience of the models on the runways. Josh spoke about taking about colour in a different way, being creative and pushing boundaries. Josh Says “Try new things that’s how you learn.”
Class 2 of the day was with Mary Rector-Gable Founder @marybehindthechair and Creative Director of Behind the Chair. The class title was Social Studies. Mary spoke about all things social media and how to grow your brand on social and gain new clients. Mary’s key message was “Be authentic.” She also said to create a brand/ personality that attracts the clients you want in your chair and what you want to create.
Balayage currently has the highest engagement on social media and warm balayage is making a comeback.
Check out some of the OG’s of social media Rebecca Taylor @rebeccataylorhair & Guy Tang @guy_tang .
Class 3 Redken Around The World And On The Streets with Hugo Urias @hueshoot and Justin Issac @worldofjustinisaac
This duo served up some great color and cutting techniques to use in the salon to maximise the clients time and also to make life easier for them at home. Hugo gave some great styling inspiration using the Redken No Blow Dry product, while Justin mixed it up demonstrating a triangular foiling pattern through the top of the head to maximise time and overall colour pop making it less maintenance for the client.
The two were joined on stage by colourists Rebecca Taylor @rebeccataylorhair and Cassandra Mc Glaughlin @cassandraplatinum. Rebecca took us through a colour technique showing off a colourful fashion and Cassandra demonstrated a 3 foil cross over foiling pattern to allow for maximum colour in a shorter time frame in the salon.
Class 4 Tess Millard @tess_millard_design and Peter Millard Salon Emotion: The Salon Experience
Tess has helped design over 50 salons across America for brands such as Redken, Kerastase, Matrix and Loreal. Peter wrote the book Reinventing Space. Together they help salons to reinvent their salon spaces through design. When creating a luxury experience there are 7 touch points in this experience in the salon
note: Anything that detracts from the client ruins the experience.
*Confidence to find the salon
*Post a list of prices and services so clients know what they are getting into
*Promote for all hair types and genders so everyone feels welcome.
*Consultation less than 8% of clients feel like they have ever had a consultation
*Basin area – allow for privacy
*Home care – Clients want your knowledge of what and why they should be using them.
People want to be valued and cared for.
Class 5 Be Inspired Adam Browne UK International Redken Artist, Kris Sorbie Redken Artist and Catherine Allard International Redken Artist held in Times Square.
Kris Sorbie @krissorbienyc spoke about finding her inspiration in the fur patterns of cats and how she is seeing a growing demand in clients wanting to grow out there greys once they have over 50% or more grey hair. Kris shared techniques and formulas using shades Eq along with models to demonstrate how to achieve a beautiful blend and grow out the greys with grace.
Catherine Allard @catherineallard.artist then inspired us with her recent experience in India at the Holi festival and how she found inspiration in the beautiful colours and fabrics of the celebration. Catherine spoke about using different colours next to each other to create movement in the hair. Catherine says “you find your inspiration then you take that and you make it yours and make it reflect your style”.
Adam Browne @adambrowneuk inspired us through his vision of reflection and what that can allow us to see in the hair and how light reflection helps to create movement in the hair. Adam coloured two models one which really got the crowd going was the Prism effect he coloured on the back of a models pixie cut using Redken City Beats, which is a temporary colour allowing clients to be creative and change up their looks.
Next up class 6 was FIX IT!
This class was with Randy Topham @randy.topham, Julie Lahr @julie_lahr and Jerick Fruits talking all things colour correction.
Randy showed different ways that he performs strand tests before starting a colour correction. The formulas included city beats colour remover, Chromatics clear + 30vol and Flash Lift with bonder inside.
Randy says “strand test every colour correction, this takes the emotion and the stress out of it…Always work in small sections this keeps you on track and stops you feeling overwhelmed.”
Modern Salon with Alison Alhamed @alisonalhamed and Maggie Mulhern @modernmaggie1 Going Live on Instagram or Facebook
Hot tips:
*If you’re not engaging or answering questions don’t go live, just do a normal video.
*General time recommended for lives is 30-60 minutes
*Introduce the key to the video up front so viewers know what they are tuning in for
*There is an apple feature called garage band where you can create your own music to have in videos if you like as this avoids licencing issues.
*Ask where people are watching from to get people to engage.
Last amazing class to wrap up the day was Groom Room with Mj Deziel @mjdeziel, Keith Owen @keithoweneducati0n, Jamie DiGrazia @jamiedigrazia and Michelle Marshall @michelle_marshall.
Barber life best seen live! This crew demonstrated some great cutting techniques. Mj showed off her skills using the comb as a guide instead, as you know you can never find the correct comb sizes for the clippers when you need them! hot tip: The thicker the comb the further away you will be from the head meaning you will maintain more length in the hair. Then have a higher grade of clipper comb and angle the comb away from the head. Mj also showed off a great 70’s inspired shag men’s cut with bangs.
Michelle Marshall was a great addition to the barbering crew bringing along her incredible colouring skills. Michelle showed us how modern day men can wear hair colour without looking tacky or overdone. Whether that be low key and naturally highlighted or slightly bolder for a pop of colour. My favourite was her technique on an afro head of hair first pre- lightened in areas and then adding colour back in with Redken City beats. This model was shaped and designed by Jamie. Men’s curls have never looked so good! Be sure to check out Michelle’s Instagram as she has posted all her formulas along with the before and after shots.
